2023 Elections May Not Hold, PDP Chairman Declares

In less than two years, 2023 elections will be upon us. Even though it is still up to 20 months away, every political player in the country already have an eye on what would be a consequential year. 2023 would mark the end of Buhari’s term in office and would signal just the third civilian to civilian hand over in Nigeria’s entire history.

The south is positioning itself to take back power (see this and this) but there are elements in the north that want power to remain there as Buhari was a disappointment and his terms shouldn’t count(?). There are also whispers that Buhari may seek tenure elongation.

2023 is, thus, a year of reckoning for the country. But 2023 may end up becoming an anti-climax if the problems in the country are not taken care of. If Nigeria’s slide into a failed state isn’t curtained, there may not be a country at all in which ballot boxes can opened and manned.

On Thursday, in a PDP National Working Committee Meeting held in Abuja in which he was given a vote of confidence, PDP chairman, Uche Secondus decried the security challenges in the country.

“Our country today is grounded by insecurity,” he said “and there has been no matching response from the government despite the demands of the 1999 operating constitution.” He quoted section 14 subsection (2b) that states thus: ‘The welfare and security of the citizens shall be the primary purpose of government’.

The government of Buhari has failed in this capacity, he opined.

“Terrorists in the North before were confined to the North East region,” he explained, “but today 50 villages have been reportedly taken by them in the North Central state of Niger.” This meeting was held in Abuja which shares borders with Niger State, a pointer that terrorism and banditry are encroaching into the federal capital territory.

“This has become necessary as nothing, not even 2023 [electons] is realistic if security issues are not adequately addressed,” Secondus affirmed.
