No less than palm oil worth around N80m was burnt by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in an attack in Enugu State, a traders’ association boss in Kano State has alleged.
Mustapha Shu’aibu Sulaiman, the Chairman, Galadima Road Traders Association, Kano State, alleged that the IPOB members attacked two of their trucks in Nsukka Local Government in Enugu while they were transporting palm oil from the southeast to Kano.
On Wednesday, Sulaimon, who spoke in a Daily Trust interview, explained that the trucks were loaded with 1,056 and 1,488 jerry cans of palm oil respectively when they were intercepted by members of the proscribed group.
He added that the truck drivers fled into the bush while the IPOB members set the trucks and the commodities it was carrying on fire.

The palm oil, he said, belonged to about 50 members of the traders’ association who are mostly small businessmen.
He said, “Some have just 20 jerry cans, some 50, and so on. And, most of them, that was all they had and now both the goods and the trucks have been burnt down.
“Even yesterday, some of these traders have attempted to stage a protest with placards, but we were able to calm them down with the support of the police.”
The traders’ association head said the matter had been reported to the police in the state, adding that a petition would also be written to the Governor of Kano, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; the state House of Assembly; the National Assembly; police authorities; NEMA and all other relevant authorities for appropriate action.
He said, “We want the federal government to compel Enugu State Government to compensate us for everything that was burnt.

“We also want our lawmakers to present a motion before the National Assembly on the need to put an end to all these. Even during the #EndSARS protest, over eight trucks belonging to northerners were burnt down and nothing was done. Now they are at it again.
“We are also planning on instituting a legal action against them.”
