At the end of a two-day contest, on the golf course of IBB International Golf and Country club, with 36 holes played, MaryRose Richard-Obioha outperformed 34 other women to lift the 21st IBB Ladies Close Championship on October 9, 2021.
Richard-Obioha, who is the lady captain of IBB Golf Club, dominated day-one proceedings with 97 strokes and a handicap of 25 to finish with a NETT score of 72 points. She was closely followed by A. Wilfred who dominated day two with a gross 83 strokes, a handicap of 8, and a nett score of 75 points.
On day two, Richard-Obioha recorded additional 76 nett points from 100 strokes and a Handicap of 24 to emerge overall winner on the cumulative score (49 Handicap and 148 Nett).
Competition in the IBB Ladies Close championship was rife throughout the tournament and it produced a fantastic display of skills and sportsmanship from both female and male participants.
Her first time winning the IBB Ladies Close, Richard-Obioha, will keep the title for one year and defend it at the 22nd edition in 2022.
In a different contest, the Eaglet Veteran Ladies Category, Sen N. Nwaogu recorded the best Nett with 79 points to win; F Anyanwu finished second on 81 points; Prof M Nwoye third with 89 points and Chief (Mrs) Ngozi V. Osuhor recorded 88 points to place fourth. They all achieved this over an 18-hole course play.
In the Super Veteran Ladies 18-hole contest, Mrs. M. F. Mmakwe grossed 98 strokes and a Handicap of 21 to finish with a nett score of 77 to win. She was closely followed by Mrs. H. Mark (89 Nett, 118 Gross, and 29 Handicap) in 2nd place and Dr. Joyce Barber in 3rd place with 93 Nett, 121 Gross, and 28 Handicap.
Throughout the duration of the championship, the duo of Asomugha and Wilfred recorded the longest drive of 195m on day one and day two, respectively. S. Nkwariza made it Nearest to the Pin on a 7ft mark on day one while Wilfred was Nearest to the Pin on day two from 11ft.
In the Ladies HC0-18 category, A. Wilfred recorded the most Handicap with a score of 150; R. Danjuma was second on 158 followed by A Abimiku in 3rd with 163 points and L. Asomugha in 4th place with 164 points.
In the Ladies HC19-36 category, P. Katchy won the Best Nett with a two-day nett of 153C/B. Other winners in this category are: J. Ayu with 153 Nett, R. Odekunle 154 Nett, M. Saleh 157 Nett, N. Abubakar 160 Nett, and F. Olateju 171 Nett to be placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th 5th and 6th positions respectively.
The male section of the IBB golf club played an 18-hole NETT tournament to add to the fun and attraction of the Ladies Close Championship.
From 270m, E Chioba hit a stroke to record the longest drive in the men’s while Tunji Adebayo was Nearest to the Pin on a 3ft distance from the hole and O. Igweh grossed the most points (75).

H. Abbo won the Eaglet Veteran Category with 72 points; A Iziyon and CJ Udeh tied on 74 points but it was Iziyon who finished in second place by hitting a lower gross score of 89 while Udeh hit 102.
E. Dirisu scored the best nett of 69 to win the Super Veteran Men category; V. Osawe (73) and D. Chuke (75) finished in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
The IBB Ladies Close Championship was held on October 8-9, 2021, and came to a climax with the awards ceremony on the tenth.
It recorded a total of 175 players out of which 35 were ladies and 140 were men.
