The Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, has provided another update on the health of its beleaguered leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is being held by the Department of State Services, or DSS.

The Biafra group sought humanitarian assistance in a letter made accessible to newsmen on Saturday morning, pleading with President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to free Kanu, claiming that the agitator might die in captivity.

According to report, the letter was given by Kanu’s legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and said that the IPOB leader’s heart is failing him and that he is suffering serious breathing problems.

Kanu’s family and members of the organization, according to Ejimakor, are concerned about his current life prospects, adding that the agitator has not gotten sufficient medical care while in DSS custody.

Kanu’s lawyer said this while pleading with the International Red Cross Society to allow Kanu to undergo an emergency and impartial medical checkup.

Kanu had told Ejimakor and the group that his blood had been extracted more than 20 times without explanation, according to Ejimakor.

He stated that he continues to be concerned and fearful that he is in the hands of people who took part in his extraordinary rendition.

Ejimakor in the letter entitled ‘RE: Urgent Appeal for your humanitarian intervention with the Government of Nigeria to grant Mazi Nnamdi Kanu access to independent medical examination and care,’ urged the Red Cross to bring its good offices to bear on the Government of Nigeria to grant Kanu opportunity of an independent medical examination and care within the shortest possible time.

According to Ejimakor: “Our client informs us that his blood has been drawn more than 20 times without explanation, and that he continues to feel apprehension and dread that he is in custody of those that partook in his extra-ordinary rendition.

“His health, particularly his heart, is failing him and he was having severe breathing issues; that his finger nails are cracking and he feels dizzy. He told us that he was not receiving the necessary medical care even when the Government of Nigeria is aware from his in-jail medical examination that his heart has enlarged by 13%.
