The Anambra State Police Command has verified the burning to death of three accused thieves at the iconic Upper Iweka Junction in Onitsha.

The three guys were set on fire by a crowd on Thursday morning after robbing a victim of his phone and attempting to flee on a bike that had broken down.

DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, the state command’s spokesperson, said personnel from the command went to the site as soon as they were alerted, but unfortunately for the accused thieves, their bodies were already smoldering in the fire.

“When the cops arrived, an enraged mob had already set three of the hoodlums on fire, while the fourth managed to flee.”

“In the meantime, police agents have arrived on the scene and are working to restore normalcy to the neighborhood, as well as catch the fleeing gang member.”

CP Echeng Echeng, the Commissioner of Police, was cited by Ikenga as frowning at the incident.

“He praised the people for supporting the police in apprehending suspected offenders, but reminded them to always use caution and not take the law into their own hands.”

When such individuals are caught, they should make every effort to transport them to the nearest police station.

“This would afford the Police the opportunity to conduct an appropriate investigation into the nefarious activities of the suspects; and bring them to justice in accordance with extant laws,” Ikenga quoted Echeng as saying.
