China has slammed the US ban on Russian oil, gas, and coal imports imposed in response to the Ukraine conflict.

In reaction for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, US President Joe Biden placed an immediate ban on Russian oil and other energy imports on Tuesday.

“Waving the large stick of sanctions will not bring us peace or security,” China Foreign Office spokeswoman Zhao Lijian told the press in Beijing on Wednesday.

“They will only wreak havoc on the economies and livelihoods of the countries concerned.”

“This scenario will benefit no one, and sanctions will simply add to the divisiveness and tension.”

China and Russia maintain good cooperation in the energy sector, he said.

“We will continue to conduct normal trade cooperation,’’ the spokesman added.

On possible punitive actions by the U.S. if Chinese banks and companies did not comply with other sanctions already imposed earlier, the spokesperson said China would take “all necessary measures’’ to resolutely defend the legitimate interests of Chinese companies and individuals.
