Enugu 2023: Ekweremadu Declares Governorship Ambition

by Victor Ndubuisi

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the former Deputy Senate President, formally launched his candidacy for governor of Enugu in 2023 on Friday.

This has put an end to months of conjecture about whether the Senator is interested in the top job in the state.

There have been discussions about zoning the governorship post in Enugu State, with supporters claiming that the Enugu East Senatorial zone should produce Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s successor.

Ekweremadu, who represents the Enugu West Senatorial Zone, has now officially entered the contest.

He proclaimed during an Enugu media interactive session that “it is now time to focus on Enugu State and Enugu people.” The governorship of Enugu State would enable me to better serve our people.”

“You want to know whether I would run for Governor?” he remarked when pressed to be specific about his desire in 2023. “I’m running for Governor,” says the candidate.

He claimed that as a legislator, he had launched and executed several life-changing initiatives across the state’s three senatorial zones.

“If elected Governor, I would use all of my expertise, friendships, partnerships, and worldwide contacts to convert Enugu State into a model state,” he stated.

Ekweremadu promised that “open door government, delivering on our agenda and pledges to the people” will restore the people’s trust in administration.

“We will tackle corruption in an innovative and efficient manner,” he added. To all inhabitants and residents of Enugu State, we shall enthrone justice, equity, and liberty.

Anaedeoonline.ng reports that he named a former lawmaker and commissioner for housing in the State, Hon. Ogbo Asogwa as his campaign coordinator.

When confronted with the ongoing debate on zoning, the Senator said no zoning agreement ever existed in the State.

He said none of the governors in the State was a product of zoning.

According to him, Chimaroke Nnamani was not a product of zoning because “I was the campaign director during his election and at no point did we discuss zoning. Sullivan Chime wasn’t a product of zoning.”

Ekweremadu added that his Enugu West zone had been marginalized in the guber position, noting that whereas Enugu East had produced three governors, Enugu North two, his Enugu West only produced one Governor.
