Senator Victor Umeh, the former national chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), has declared that former Anambra Governor Willie Obiano will be defended.

He said this in response to Obiano’s detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) just hours after he was turned over to Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Prof. Uzodimma Nwala, a leading Nigerian philosopher and president general of the Alaigbo Development Foundation, celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday in Enugu, and Umeh said the anti-graft agency had made it a trend to go after ex-governors.

Obiano, according to the former congressman, utilized Anambra funds to create infrastructure that was visible to all, angering the opposition.

“It is not new in Nigeria,” he remarked. When most governors leave office, the EFCC will swarm on them.
He needs to be given the opportunity to be heard. We have no idea why he was detained. But I’m confident he’ll be able to defend himself if people listen to him.

“One thing I keep telling people is that former governor Obiano did a fantastic job with the money from Anambra. He made good use of our funds, much to the chagrin of the opposition. They refuse to accept it.

“A governor who built an international airport, got it commissioned and working. Planes are coming in there and going and you are still looking for your money. He also built an international conference centre. All these projects he didn’t build them with sand. Apart from meeting the other obligations of running the government, meeting the needs of the people, paying workers salaries, he did so much for Anambra State. That is why we have to be calm to allow the EFCC to finish their job. But I’m confident that Obiano will defend himself”.
