The Catholic Church’s Assumpta Cathedral in Owerri, Imo State’s capital, has been completely destroyed by fire.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the fire, which erupted at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night, destroyed several of the church’s facilities.

The fire broke out just three days after Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna, the Archbishop Emeritus of Owerri Archdiocese and now Apostolic Administrator, briefed journalists on his retirement and prayed for his successor, Archbishop Ugorji.

According to him, the fire was started by an electrical problem in the church’s technical unit, which is located near the sacristy.

Fr. Nzereogu, who commended the Fire Service for coming on time to put off the fire, said it didn’t spread much due to the quick intervention of the firemen.

He further said, “if the Fire Service had not come, it would have been a disaster but we thank God for their quick response.”
