ASUU Strike: Group Asks FG To Honour Agreement Reached With Lecturers

The Imo State University Alumni Association (IMSUAA) has urged the Federal Government to maintain stable finance and welfare for universities by honoring agreements signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the country’s general interest.

Following the federal government’s failure to follow through on agreements signed with ASUU years ago, university lecturers are presently on strike.

In Abakaliki, the union’s National Executive Council met to examine problems related to the strike.

The opening of Universities, according to a communique issued by the National President and Secretary, Prince Ferdinard Ezeala Akano and Dr Anayo C. Uhiara, respectively, and adopted and ratified by all Chapter delegates to the NEC meeting, would save undergraduates the avoidable ordeal of remaining at home while their counterparts around the world are in schools receiving lectures and progressing in their development.

The NEC bemoaned the persistent insecurity in Imo State and urged the government and key stakeholders to promptly resolve the problem in order to protect Imo residents’ lives and property.

NEC also resolved that the biennial National Executive Council elections of Imo State University Alumni Association shall be held on the first Saturday in November 2022 and urged Chapters to conduct their various Chapter elections not later than 30th October 2022; and shall announce the National Electoral Committee in the next few weeks.

It mandated all Adhoc Committees to submit their various Committee reports within the next two weeks and resolved that the association shall commence the street lighting initiative of the streets of Imo State University, in line with the appeal of the Ag. Vice-Chancellor.

It urged the Government of Imo State, the Senate and Governing Council of Imo State University to facilitate the election and emergence of a substantive Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University Owerri, who has been a critical part of the Imo State University system.
