Mrs Bassey Ekong, a blind grandmother, saved two children, Gideon Edet and Kingsley Edet, from their parents’ attempt to sell them to suspected ritualists in Akwa Ibom.

Due to poverty, the victim’s parents had finalized talks to sell them for N50,000 and N20,000, respectively, when their grandmother interfered.

Mrs Ekong, who is from Mbiokporo in the state’s Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, told Punch that she prevented the children’s mother, who is her second daughter, from selling her children after she threatened to curse her.

She revealed that the father was unemployed when her daughter, a homemaker, gave birth to her first kid. A friend to their mother later linked the family to suspected ritualists who offered to buy the children.

The grandmother claimed that the mother and father of the children conspired to sell them but when they told her, she cursed them and threatened to report the matter to the police, which made them abandon the children.

“I suffered to raise the children by engaging in menial jobs and weeding people’s farm for meagre wages, just to keep the kids,” Ekong added.

She stated further that when the children were old enough to begin schools she enrolled them at St. George’s Primary School, Aka Offot, Uyo, but things had become quite difficult for them and she could no longer cater for the children finances.

“I cry for these children each day they leave for school without food and no writing materials in class. Now, I can’t help them. Their parents ran away as they failed in their plot to sell them to ritualists.”
