Nigerians are being encouraged to ride bicycles to stay fit and healthy, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The recommendation was given by Kogi FRSC sector commander Stephen Dawulung in a statement published by FRSC education officer Ayodeji Oluwadunsin in honor of the upcoming World Bicycle Day on June 3, 2022.

“Bicycles have over the years proved to be a veritable and effective mode of alternative transportation beside its other health advantages to man. Apart from making cities smarter and more attractive as openly seen in cities of some Asian countries, the use of non-motorised transportation such as the bicycle completely eliminates carbon emissions released into the atmosphere by vehicles,” the FRSC official said.

It went on to say that the FRSC, in collaboration with the UN, urged Nigerians to embrace cycling in order to improve health and minimize collisions on the country’s roads.

The sector commander also stated that, in collaboration with the United Nations, the FRSC would begin and promote programs and measures that would promote cycling as a viable alternative mode of transportation.

He highlighted that the Nigerian urban transportation system was sensitive to increases in oil prices due to its reliance on motor cars, which resulted in increased national fuel consumption and significant traffic congestion on our highways.

Cycling activities, he claims, should not be undervalued as a sport or mode of transportation because they minimize demand on health services and labor expenses while increasing life expectancy is improved.

He explained that this year’s theme ‘Cycling For Earth and Humanity’ was chosen based on the advantages of the use of bicycles.

“A bicycle parking demands up to 10 times less space than parking a car and it’s much more flexible with high penetrations ability compared to public transport. Health-wise, riding a bicycle increases cardiovascular fitness, stimulates reduction in anxiety and depression and improves joint mobility,” he stated.

He also expressed optimism that the FRSC’s symbolic cycling display this year, in collaboration with the Kogi Bicycle Association and other stakeholders, will help to improve our transportation system and public awareness of non-motorized transportation.

Mr Dawulung, on the other hand, asked cyclists to follow traffic laws and regulations just like other road users for their own safety.
