The Presidency has disputed media claims that President Muhammadu Buhari wanted the governing All Progressives Congress’ presidential ticket to be zoned to the south.

On Saturday night, many stories surfaced claiming that the President had backed a power shift to the South in the 2023 general elections.

Buhari said this at a luncheon with All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential contenders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to reports.

However, Presidential Spokesman Garba Shehu told the BBC on Sunday that allegations that Buhari had requested party officials to nominate a Southern contestant as the party’s consensus candidate were inaccurate.

The presidential spokesperson further denied claims that Nigeria’s president declared he would only support a candidate from the south as his successor.

Shehu said that the president just urged all the presidential candidates to reach an agreement among themselves before the party’s presidential primary poll on June 6th to 9th.

Buhari also stated that he would support anyone picked during the consensus negotiations, regardless of the aspirant’s area.

He said: “This issue has not arisen. All he has to do is negotiate and get one person out of it, and he has shown that as a leader he is ready to provide leadership to make that happen.”
