Following the protracted industrial action, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reported that a significant portion of its members are leaving the nation to pursue their professions abroad.

This information was revealed on Thursday by the union’s national president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who was answering questions from reporters at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

He bemoaned the Federal Government’s decision to withhold the lecturers’ pay because they went on strike, claiming that such actions are unheard of elsewhere in the world.

He said, “We don’t have a certain statistic but a large number of our members have moved out of the country not because they hate this country but because of the way they are being treated.

“There’s no country in the world where their academics will go on strike and you think the best weapon is to seize their salary”.

Recall that on February 14, ASUU shut down public colleges because to the Federal Government’s failure to carry out prior agreements that both sides had signed.
