The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has distanced itself from Afenifere’s support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Ayo Adebanjo, the head of the Yoruba socio-cultural organization, reiterated his support for the former governor of Anambra State on Monday.

Adebanjo claims that although the south-south held the presidency for six years, the south-west produced a president and the present vice president.

However, he noted that the South-East has never held the president in Nigeria and that the Igbo should now take the helm now that it has been passed to the South.

He stated that Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as other presidential candidates, would not receive Afenifere’s support.

The YCE Secretary-General, Dr. Kunle Olajide, stated that the elders are not in support of Afenifere backing Obi in an interview with Newsmen on Monday.

Olajide revealed that the elders would meet and decide which presidential candidate they would support in 2023.

He said: “We have not been informed or briefed. Yes, we support restructuring and we stand for restructuring but as far as we are concerned, restructuring should be fundamental to any incoming government.
