The European Union (EU) has approved a new regulation mandating the use of the USB-C (Type C) connector for all cellphones sold within its member states beginning in 2024.

As a result, according to Forbes, Apple, the parent company of the iPhone, recognized that it would have to comply and modify the chargers for subsequent smartphones.

Greg Joswiak, chief of global marketing at Apple, stated during a live event hosted by the Wall Street Journal that the business was forced to comply.

“Obviously, we’ll have to comply… We have no choice as we do around the world but to comply to local laws”, he said.

By the end of 2024, all smartphones, tablets, headphones, cameras, gaming consoles, wireless mouse, and keyboards will have to comply with the new regulations by having a USB Type-C charging port.

All iPhones use Apple’s lightning charger, despite the fact that some iPad and MacBook models also support Type-C chargers.

Because over a billion consumers currently have devices that use Lightning charges, Joswiak confessed that the business wasn’t exactly thrilled about the required adjustment.

The marketing executive did not provide a timeframe for the transition or say whether Apple would simply produce a separate model of its products for the European market while continuing to sell products with its Lightning charges everywhere else.

Joswiack also discussed how the Lightning and USB C chargers would not have been created if Apple had complied with the EU’s demand ten years ago to switch to the unstable and easily broken Micro USB charging connections.

He said, “Apple designed its cables detachable so individuals could connect different cables to the same adaptor since part of the EU’s concern at the time was that people had different adapters and connectors.”

Under the end of 2024, Apple will be required by the new EU mandate to supply iPhones and iPads in the region with USB-C connections.
