Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has encouraged the Church in Nigeria to be vigilant and not be manipulated by desperate politicians seeking power at any cost in the 2023 general elections.

This was declared by the governor on Sunday at the St. Paul’s Cathedral in Diobu-Port Harcourt during the Rivers Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dedication Service for the 2023 Election Campaigns.

Wike advised the Nigerian Church to’shine its eyes,’ which means to be aware of current events and avoid being drawn unduly into political intrigues.

“All of us should participate in the politics of Nigeria but the church must not be used as if we are fighting a religious war.

“We have to be careful so that the church is not destroyed,” the governor said.

Wike stated that, just as the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket is bad for democracy, it is equally undesirable for a northerner – the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar – to succeed Katsina-born President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

“We cannot hand over govt to unserious people,” Wike said, adding that political parties must pay to use any public facility in Rivers.

With less than two months until the 2023 presidential election on February 25, candidates have been seen at megachurch major programs, subtly seeking support from their vast congregations.

Wike’s presidential ambitions were dashed in May when he lost the PDP primary to Atiku. Atiku, a former Vice President, later stung Wike when he chose Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate over his closest challenger in the primary.

Since then, Wike has been at odds with PDP presidential candidate Atiku over the chairmanship of Iyorchia Ayu. Wike, along with four other PDP governors known as the G5 or the Integrity Group, have requested that Benue-born Ayu stand down to make way for a southerner as a condition for supporting the 2023 ambition of Atiku.

Last month, Wike promised logistical help for the campaigns of the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

While Wike and his allies have not been spotted campaigning for Atiku, it is unclear whether they will back Obi, Kwankwaso, or the APC’s Bola Tinubu in the race for the top position in Aso Rock.
