Christopher Elehu, a candidate for the Labour Party in the Onuimo Local Government Area of the Imo State House of Assembly, was assassinated on Friday by gunmen who are thought to be paid killers.
Along with killing him, the shooters burned down his rural home and stole his belongings, including a motorcycle.

According to report, the suspects opened fire early on Friday and continued for almost two hours.
According to reports, the shooters who were on the spree also paid visits to the homes of other local officials, but they were greeted by their absence.
A source who doesn’t want to be mentioned said, “They have killed Christopher Elehu, popularly known as Wasco. Until his death he was the Labour Party candidate in Onuimo Local Government Area. They invaded his house when everybody had gone to sleep and shot for over two hours.
“They killed the man and burnt his house. They also destroyed his property. His corpse was lying on the floor with matchete cuts when villagers gathered in the morning.”
The politician was assassinated just ten days after Chukwunonye Irouno, the LP candidate in Okigwe, a sister LGA, passed away unexpectedly.

Irouno, who was scheduled to serve as the rally’s emcee for the LP’s presidential campaign in the state, slept through the event. He was taken to the Federal Medical Center in Owerri and later declared dead.
The state’s police had not yet released a statement regarding the murder occurrence.
