Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) nominee for president in 2023, paid a visit to internally displaced people (IDPs) at the Abagana camp in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, on Sunday to celebrate 2022 Christmas with them and express solidarity with their five years of protracted displacement at the hands of suspected herdsmen.

Speaking to the IDPs, Obi advised them to wait it out and pray for God’s help, stating that he understood their suffering and losses, which is why he chose to join them on a day like Christmas when many families exchange love.

In order for the IDPs to resume their lives, he further urged the Federal Government to resettle them.

Many presidential contenders had visited Benue, but Governor Samuel Ortom, who welcomed Obi to the Government House, claimed they lacked the compassion to visit the more than eight IDP camps to feel their suffering.

If given the mandate by Nigerians in 2023, a man like Obi, according to Ortom, will transform the course of the country.

Following his speech, Obi went to the Abagana IDP camp to spend Christmas with the IDPs who have been residing there since last year.

Some of the IDPs expressed their happiness and demanded their quick resettlement.
