Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, stated on Thursday that the country’s highest office was not a retirement home for those in their 70s and older, but rather a place for young, nimble individuals who have a passion for the growth of the country.

Obi, who claimed to be the only young person running for office in the four major political parties on February 25, said it was the youth of Nigeria’s turn to retake the nation by holding high office and other positions.

The LP flagbearer repeatedly emphasized “character, competency, commitment, and compulsion as important in the election” when campaigning in Ekiti State, adding, “this election must be based on character, competence, commitment, and compulsion.”

“We want people who are competent, who understand the problem of our country. Our people are dying of poverty, we want people that will fight poverty. The LP government is going to fight poverty. I am committed to building a new Nigeria. Let nobody tell you it is his turn, I am not contesting based on turn, I am contesting as a Nigerian who is the most qualified.”

He warned the young people, “It is not a retirement home,” as he solicited the support of the Ekiti people to become the next president. We want you to assume leadership since our government will be made up entirely of women, young people, and children.

“Vote for Peter Obi and the vice presidential candidate, Ahmed Datti, and see how Nigeria will change. I and Datti are qualified. We have the education, the physical energy, the commitment, the passion.

“The LP government will secure and unite this country. Today, there is no security in the country, we want to secure and unite the country. Today, people are hungry in the country, there are no jobs, there are no jobs for our youths.

“What we want to do is to ensure that we move the country forward from consumption to production. If we start producing in this country, there will be jobs, our youths will have jobs, we will export, then the value of the naira will be strong against the currencies of the United States, United Kingdom and others”.

“Vote for Obi who is capable, tested, and trustworthy to eradicate poverty, starvation, corruption, and insecurity in Nigeria,” the Ekiti LP Chairman, Odunayo Okunade, told Ekiti voters in his speech.

Julius Abure, the LP’s national chairman, thanked the party faithful for their outpouring of support for the party and urged them to support Obi in the upcoming presidential election on February 25 because “he is trustworthy, dedicated, committed, and ready to fight for the survival of the youths and Nigerians.”
