The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued President Muhammadu Buhari over an increase in electricity tariffs.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the group’s Deputy Director, Kolawale Oluwadare, acknowledged this in a statement on Sunday.

Respondents in the complaint include Abubakar Malami, the country’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC.

The group’s action follows NERC’s approval of pricing increases for Electricity Distribution Companies.

The complaint, FHC/L/CS/99/2023, was filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

SERAP told the court to “compel President Buhari to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr Abubakar Malami, and appropriate anti-corruption agencies to promptly investigate the spending of public funds as investments and bailouts to DisCos and GenCos since 2005.”

Nigerians have been subjected to continuous electricity bill increases since Buhari’s government took office in 2015, despite the lack of an improved power supply.
