The Rivers State Government has stated that Governor Nyesom Wike is not to blame for the arrest of Atiku Support Organisation members in the state.

According to news reports, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, has been in a continuous struggle with Wike and four other disgruntled PDP governors since winning the party’s nomination last year.

However, armed officers seized approximately 30 members of the Atiku support organization on Sunday during a meeting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

According to Victor Moses, the spokesman for the support organization, some of those imprisoned were state and local government officials of the group.

He claimed that the police officers were acting on the orders of Governor Wike, who has refused to participate in PDP Presidential Campaign events.

On Monday, Rivers State’s State Commissioner for Information, Chris Finebone, responded to the claim, saying it is nonsensical for the state’s support organization to link Wike to any concerns it may have with the police.

According to Finebone, the claim is one of many occasions in which people find it expedient to throw an accusing finger at a government in power.

Although the commissioner would not confirm the arrest of the organization’s members, he did state that whenever people violate the law, security officers must intervene to keep the peace.
