Three state governments now headed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) have taken President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to court over the Central Bank of Nigeria’s new currency policy (CBN).

In response to the current hardship being experienced by their state citizens as a result of the CBN’s naira redesign policy, the governments of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara have reportedly taken the Federal government to the Supreme Court, seeking a restraining order to prevent the policy’s full implementation.

The three northern states are requesting an interim injunction from the Supreme Court in a motion ex-parte filed on their behalf by their lawyer, Abdul Hakeem Uthman Mustapha (SAN), to prevent the Federal Government, acting alone or through the CBN, commercial banks, or its agents, from carrying out its plan to end the timeframe within which the now older versions of the 200, 500, and 1000 denominations of the Naira may no longer be legal tender on February 1.

The three Attorneys-General and Commissioners of Justice of the three states are the Plaintiffs in the complaint, while the single Respondent is the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
