The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, or HURIWA, a well-known civil rights advocacy group, has urged the Supreme Court to mend its reputation.

The rights organisation mentioned the Francis Agbo v. Aida Ogwuche case in its request for the supreme court to utilise it to “repair its declining image.”
The Supreme Court is swimming in scalding hot troubled waters, according to Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, National Coordinator of HURIWA, who was speaking to reporters in Abuja after a slew of contentious rulings from the highest court in the land.

But there is now an unique chance for this harshly criticised top court to repair the damage done to her reputation in the public eye and even the widespread contempt that some jurists have recently brought to this judicial institution through absurd and unfair decisions and foolish decrees.

“The case on People’s Democratic Party’s primary for the candidate for the 2023 House of Representatives slot for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadido Federal Constituency is the litmus test.

On the ruling of the apex court’s judgement of the old Naira notes, Onwubiko said, “There is no doubt that millions of Nigerians are worried that even the High Courts of States disobeyed the order of the Supreme Court on the validity of the old naira notes beyond February 10th.

“The Supreme Court’s order has also been flouted by President Muhammadu Buhari who made a broadcast seemingly overruling the Supreme Court’s order which ought to operate until February 22nd 2023 when the substantive suit on the new naira notes between some states versus Attorney General of the Federation was fixed for determination.”
