According to a statement issued by the country’s interior minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Spanish authorities reduced the influx of African migrants by about 60%.
Last Friday, during a visit to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) in Warsaw, Poland, the minister urged the agency’s director, Hans Leijtens, to continue working with the Spanish government and African partners to deter unlawful migrants.
Mr Grande-Marlaska boasted that their collaboration had generated significant results thus far, pointing that Spain recorded a strong 56.9% decline in illegal migration, compared to the 25.6% reported in 2022.

“Spain’s experience shows that the best way to deal with this phenomenon is to work with our partners to prevent irregular flows in the countries of origin and transit, based on cooperation, based on mutual trust and sustained in time,” Schengenvisainfo quoted the interior minister as saying.
He stated that the majority of the cutbacks were noticed around the peninsula’s coasts, as well as in Ceuta, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands—all of which are ports of entry into the EU by sea.
According to the minister, because Spain, Cyprus, Greece, and Italy are typically the first nations where illegal immigrants arrive, their borders must be safeguarded.
“External borders are not only national but European, and given the challenges we face, states of first entry must be supported politically and operationally,” Mr Grande-Marlaska said.
