Following the resignation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, and National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore, by the party’s National Vice Chairman, North-west, Salihu Lukman, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, has been tipped to replace Adamu.

According to news sources, Lukman has called for an emergency national assembly to resolve difficulties inside the ruling party.

Following the election of Bola Tinubu as President-Elect, Lukman stated that the party’s incoming National Chairman must be a Christian.

Despite the hurdles, Adamu, according to Lukman, has done a good job in leading the party to victory in the 2023 election.

He stated that convincing Adamu to resign as National Chairman to facilitate a Christian takeover would be difficult.

Meanwhile, a source told Newsmen that Lukman’s position has the full support of Kaduna state Governor Ahmed Nasir el-Rufai.

According to the source, this might open the way for former Benue State governor Akume to become the party’s next chairman.

In the run-up to the party’s National Convention in 2022, Akume was widely expected to win the chairmanship before being persuaded by the Presidency to step down for Adamu.

Akume had a good working connection with the President-elect during their time together in the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), where he was re-elected on the party platform in April 2011 after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
