The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has threatened to sue the Nigerian government if Labour Party supporter Nnamdi Chude, who was arrested on Saturday in Anambra State, is not released unconditionally.

Anambra state Governor Chukwuma Soludo stated on Sunday that Chude was apprehended in Anambra – Onitsha by Interpol’s Cyber Crime Section and transported to Abuja.

But he said he had no knowledge of the circumstances surrounding his detention.

On Sunday, news outlets claimed that Chude was arrested on Saturday evening for reportedly comparing the Governor Soludo-led administration to that of former Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju.

While the state’s State Assembly election was taking place on Saturday, Chude tweeted that thugs allegedly acting on the orders of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – Governor Soludo’s political party – were on the rampage, stealing ballot boxes and disrupting elections in Trans-Nkisi, 3’3 and Awada.

Following the tweet, he was reportedly apprehended by security operatives in Onitsha at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, from whence he was transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Reacting to Chude’s arrest, SERAP in a short statement on its Twitter page, said, “The Buhari administration must immediately and unconditionally release Mr Nnamdi Chude who was reportedly arrested yesterday over a tweet alleging electoral offences in Anambra State. We’ll see in court if he is not released within 24 hours.”
