The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano has disputed the outcome that validated the election of Abba Yusuf of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) as governor-elect.

Mr Yusuf was named the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday.

Mr Yusuf received 1,019,602 votes, according to the state Returning Officer, Doko Ibrahim, who announced the results in Kano.

According to him, the flagbearer trounced his nearest challenger and incumbent deputy governor of the state, Yusuf Gawuna of the APC, who received 892,705 votes.

But, speaking at a press conference in Kano on Tuesday, the APC’s state chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, said the party would contest the result.

Mr Abbas, who was represented by the party’s legal counsel, Abdul Adamu Fagge, insisted that the election should be declared inconclusive.

According to him, the cancelled votes exceed the margin provided by the Election Act between the APC and NNPP candidates.

The party also called attention to the annulment of 16 House of Assembly elections in the state, citing violence as the reason, despite the fact that the same votes were used in the governorship election.

Despite expressing disappointment with the outcome, he stated that the two elections took place on the same day, at the same time, in the same areas, and under the same conditions.

Mr Gawuna, for his part, praised committed members for their maturity both during and after the election.

“We will follow the due legal process to reclaim our mandate as we call residents to continue to live in peace with one another,” he said.

Mr Gawuna stated that the party had resolved to challenge the election results through the legal system.

Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, stated his election was identical to what happened in Kano, but his election was deemed inconclusive.

Mr Doguwa stated that 12 of the 13 impacted polling units were annulled due to violence and overvoting, and that he has now accepted his faith and is waiting for the election to be repeated.
