Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, has urged the Nigerian government to guarantee that the people’s mandate is not hijacked.
Obi stated on Twitter that the government must protect the democratic process and citizens’ rights in response to the “naked protest” by women in Nasarawa State who claimed that the governorship election that re-elected Governor Abdullahi Sule was rigged.
According to news reports, some women in Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria, stripped nude to protest the outcome of the state’s gubernatorial and State Assembly elections on Saturday.

The enraged women had stated that they did not vote for Governor Abdullahi Sule, who was proclaimed the victor of the governorship race by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) despite controversies.
Protesters holding placards with varied slogans accused Governor Sule of manipulating his way to power and imposing himself on the people. As a result, they cursed everyone who took part in denying them what they called their mission.
Obi called the demonstration “heartbreaking,” pointing out that the purpose of elections is to allow residents to engage in democratic governance through the representatives they elect.
“Our women who should be honoured and respected, and their rights protected, have been degraded and left to seek justice the only way they can trust by calling on their creator.

“Government to ensure that the mandate of the people is not stolen from them. As a nation, he said, we must do better to safeguard the democratic process and uphold the rights of our citizens,” he said.
I just came across a sad, heartbreaking video where Nasarawa women staged a topless protest as a means of registering their displeasure with the election results.
