There are indications that former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha is planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to a disagreement with the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

According to news sources, the two political gladiators were allowed last week to run on the party’s ticket in the November governorship election in Imo State.

Ihedioha withdrew from the campaign on Tuesday, when ward congresses to elect delegates for the governorship primary election were still taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In a letter dated March 27 and addressed to the PDP National Chairperson, Ihedioha announced that he was leaving “in the interest of harmony and unity within our party.”

Remember that Ihedioha was fired as governor of Imo State by the Supreme Court in January 2020, after only seven months in office.

Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was proclaimed the winner of the state’s governorship election on March 19, 2019, by a seven-member panel led by Chief Justice Tanko Muhammad.

The appellant, Uzodimma, claimed that he received the most votes in the election, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chose Ihedioha as the state’s governor.

According to sources, the former Imo State governor dropped out of the campaign to protest Anyanwu’s ongoing tenure as National Secretary while running for governor of the state.

Anyanwu, as National Secretary, has continued to play significant roles in the processes leading up to the primary election to select the governorship flag candidate.

Speaking on the subject, Action 2023, a PDP pressure organization, called Anyanwu’s actions “naked impunity” that was being perpetuated by the suspended PDP National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.

According to a statement issued by the chairman of the PDP Action 2023, Dr. Rufus Omeire, Ayu had rejected protests and demands to the party’s leadership to rectify the anomaly prior to his suspension on Monday.

Omeire stated that Ihedioha’s withdrawal from the contest had upset PDP members and supporters in Imo State, particularly those who were hoping for a re-election in November to re-establish his 2019 mandate, which they claimed, was “stolen” in January 2020.

It added: “It is shocking that as the National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu, who was screened and cleared to contest for the ticket, was the same person that signed the clearance certificates for the aspirants.”
