The Department of State Services (DSS) has stayed mute on the arrest of Fredrick Nwajagu, Eze Igbo of Ajao Estate in Lagos.

According to news reports, Nwajagu was arrested on Saturday for allegedly threatening to summon members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to Lagos to secure Igbo property in the state.

Nwajagu stated in a viral video that the invitation of IPOB members became imperative following attacks on Igbos in South West state.

He was quoted saying, “IPOB, we will invite them. They have no job. All of the IPOB will protect all of our shops. And we have to pay them. We have to mobilise for that. We have to do that. We must have our own security so that they will stop attacking us at midnight, in the morning, and in the afternoon.

“When they discover that we have our own security before they will come, they will know that we have our own men there. I am not saying a single word to be hidden. I am not hiding my words, let my words go viral. Igbo must get their right and get a stand in Lagos State.”

The Lagos Police Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest, saying Nwajagu was apprehended after a midnight raid on a hotel in the state’s Ejigbo region by security officers.

Hundeyin went on to say that the Igbo leader had been turned over to the DSS for further action on his inflammatory remarks.

He said, “The operation was carried out at midnight. The security operatives didn’t meet him in his palace. But we found out through intelligence gathering that he had lodged in a hotel in Ejigbo. He was traced to the location and arrested around 1 am.

“He is currently in the DSS custody where he is being investigated.”

Yet, despite police confirmation of the arrest, the DSS has yet to release a statement on the arrest since Saturday.
