Enugu Assembly Laments How Nigerian Soldiers Assaulted, Intimidated Residents

The Enugu House of Assembly urged President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday to look into allegations of military abuses, intimidation, and harassment during the March 18 gubernatorial and state assembly elections.

Chinedu Nwamba introduced the motion for the desired probe at plenary (PDP-Nsukka East).
He stated that the military’s constitutional mission was to defend Nigeria against external invasion, to maintain territorial integrity, and to secure its borders from land, sea, and air violations.

He added that on March 17, Enugu people awoke to see a large number of combat-ready, fierce-looking, AK-47-wielding troops deployed across all 17 local government areas.

The member added that armored trucks and advanced armaments could be seen all around the state, as though the military was preparing to go to war. During the period, he claimed, there was manhandling and physical intimidation of people.

In support of the resolution, House Speaker Edward Ubosi urged Mr Buhari to probe the military’s role and excesses in Enugu during the elections.

He directed the president to punish anyone who was found wanting to serve as a deterrence to others.

Mr. Ubosi said that major electoral malpractices and intimidation rocked the 2023 governorship and state legislature elections in Enugu.

The speaker also challenged the National Assembly with confirming whether it has passed an act authorizing the deployment of fully armed military personnel to Enugu on March 17.
