EPL: Chelsea Signs Frank Lampard As Interim Manager

Frank Lampard has been appointed manager of the team for the remainder of the 2022-2023 season, two years after being fired.

Frank Lampard has officially taken over as the successor for Graham Potter, who was fired on Sunday due to a dismal run of results.

Lampard has been out of work since Everton let him go in January. Prior to his disappointing tenure at the Merseyside club, he was manager of the Blues from July 2019 to January 2021.

Chelsea, who are 11th in the Premier League, will play Wolves on Saturday (at 15:00) before facing Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on April 12 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Chelsea Co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali stated in a statement that former midfielder Lampard will take command as they look for a permanent coach ahead of next season.

“We want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season,” the statement read.

“We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.”

Lampard took over the team while they were under a transfer embargo, and he led them to the FA Cup final and fourth place in his first season.

He was fired by previous owner Roman Abramovich after spending £200 million the next summer on seven key recruits, including current stars Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz, with the team eighth in the Premier League and having won only two of their previous eight games.

Chelsea won the Champions League final four months after he was sacked by Thomas Tuchel.

Lampard was appointed manager of Everton in January 2022, however he was fired eight days before his year anniversary following nine losses in 12 Premier League games this season.
