According to a new Reuters/Ipsos survey issued on Thursday, April 6, the prosecution of former US President Donald Trump has divided Americans evenly but looks to have boosted his chances of gaining the Republican nomination for the 2024 election.

The poll was taken on Wednesday and Thursday, April 5th, following Trump’s indictment on 34 felony counts of falsifying company records by New York City prosecutors on Tuesday. The credibility interval, a measure of precision, for the survey of 1,004 U.S. adults is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points for all respondents and plus or minus 6.3 percentage points for the 368 Republicans who participated in the poll.

According to the poll, 49% of all Americans believe it is appropriate for prosecutors to bring the first criminal case against a U.S. president or past president.

Around 40% of Republicans thought the case increased their likelihood of voting for Trump in 2024, while 12% said it decreased their likelihood of doing so. Another 38% felt it made no difference.

Trump leads the Republican field by a large margin, with 58% of Republicans saying he is their favorite nominee. This is up from 48% in a Monday Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second, despite the fact that he has not formally entered the contest.

While Democrats and Republicans are strongly divided on the case’s prosecution, the survey found a significant opinion that Trump coordinated payments to porn star Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal to keep them quiet about alleged extramarital affairs.
