Prof. Wole Soyinka, a Nigerian Noble Laurette, has been requested to debate a prominent novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and has canceled his planned discussion with Labour Party (LP) presidential running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the recently concluded presidential election, slammed Soyinka after the renowned playwright and novelist challenged Yusuf Datti to a TV debate over his position on the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

Soyinka, who openly disagreed with the Labour Party presidential running mate’s viewpoint, questioned the mentality of party followers known colloquially as “obidients.”

He then challenged the lawmaker to a one-on-one debate on the subject. According to Newsmen, the Obi-Datti Media Office has subsequently refused the renowned Professor’s debate invitation, stating that it would be inappropriate for its presidential running partner to sit and point out the absurdity of Soyinka’s argument to him.

In response, Atiku’s adviser, Bwala, stated that Soyinka was not a politician and that Yusuf Datti should reject his challenge.

He challenged Soyinka to a debate with Chimamanda Adichie rather than Datti. According to him, Soyinka’s debate with Adichie will be a reenactment of the Biblical David and Goliath scenario.

Tweeting, Bwala wrote: “Am told Prof. Soyinka asked to debate Datti. No, he should ask to debate Chimamanda Adichie.

“Datti is a politician, Soyinka is not, so it will be an unfair debate.

“But both Soyinka and Chimamanda trade on literature and grammar. #Soyinkadebatechimamanda.

“When he tries Chimamanda, he will understand the phrase ‘nobody has the monopoly of knowledge’. It will certainly be the case of David v Goliath.”
