According to the International Air Transport Association, (IATA) the implementation of the 1500-hour flight regulation has resulted in a brain drain in Africa in terms of certified pilots.

WIllie Warsh, Director General of IATA, just announced this during the “Focus Africa” virtual launch.

He noted that whereas Africa was seeing a tremendous migration of pilots, the United States of America and Canada were experiencing brain gain.

Walsh stated that the 1500-hour rule has resulted in highly skilled persons leaving their native region or country for greater employment opportunities in the United States over time.

“The 1500-hour rule has caused a shortage of qualified pilots in the USA, not Europe. It makes the country attractive. In Africa, it leads to a situation whereby talents leave the continent to other countries,” he said.

The “1500 hour rule” refers to the amount of flight time needed to become a licensed commercial pilot in the United States and Canada.

Meanwhile, to become a Commercial Pilot in the rest of the world, only 250 hours are required.
