The third Maryland Bridge billboard, which featured an advertisement for the movie Gangs of Lagos, was demolished days after the Lagos State Government denounced the promoters and referred to the film as a parody of Lagos’ history.

Recall that Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, voiced her disgust in the Eyo Masquerade being portrayed as a villain with a gun while wearing the complete traditional regalia in a statement on Wednesday.

Lagos Govt Condemns Gangs of Lagos Movie, Make Strong Demands

“We are of the opinion that the production of the film ‘The Gang of Lagos’ is very unprofessional and misleading while its content is derogatory of our culture, with the intention to desecrate the revered heritage of the people of Lagos. It is an unjust profiling of a people and culture as being barbaric and nefarious. It depicts a gang of murderers rampaging across the State,” the Commissioner said in a statement.

In response to their criticism of the brutality and gangsterism depicted by Eyo in the movie, the descendants of Isale Eko also made legal threats.

The Gang of Lagos banner, however, was recently removed from the billboard next to the third mainland bridge.
