In the Lake Chad Basin, there are worries that the deadly Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) is getting ready to use drones for attacks.

A report from the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) made this information public.

ISWAP intends to employ unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to fly improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to specific places in Nigeria and adjacent countries in an effort to carry out operations unnoticed.

It stated that Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (JAS) and ISWAP had suffered losses at the hands of Nigerian military, causing the latter to rethink its strategy.

An intricate use of communication technologies was discovered by an ISS report that included an analysis of propaganda materials and interviews with former combatants and associates.

Satellite phones, drones, social media, quick printers, computers, cameras, Wi-Fi, clip-on microphones, walkie-talkies, and data compression and archiving software are some examples of what is covered in this.

The study discovered that the equipment is utilized by the ISWAP media unit, which is headed by Abba Yusuf (also known as Abu Rumaisa), the late Boko Haram founder’s son.

Former combatants who were briefed on ISWAP’s most recent tactics described how staff members were chosen from inside the group and instructed on how to assume positions during attacks and record images and videos.

Before switching to Chad, where satellite phones are prohibited, ISWAP used Thuraya Wi-Fi and spent roughly $6,000 a month on data, according to ISS. Lagos served as the main supply source.

“Those bringing in equipment and accessories should explain their destinations; collaboration among security forces in the four affected Lake Chad Basin countries can help,” it noted.

On military collaborators who help terrorists, the military was encouraged to “hold their personnel to the highest standards and use an independent ombudsman to deter corruption.”

Regarding civilians collaborating with terrorist organizations, ISS encouraged authorities to communicate with local authorities and pertinent organizations to spot and dismantle networks supporting terrorists.

Since insurgents are likely to commit cybercrime, the committee also advocated greater government technological investment and collaboration with tech firms.

“Going after ISWAP’s money is vital…to its major revenue base. Curtailing access to technology will prevent it from using tech to plan and execute attacks, spread propaganda, and recruit,” ISS added.
