The Lagos government has started demolishing unauthorized buildings on Banana Island in affluent Ikoyi.
The disposal is being done by the Environmental and Special Offenses Unit (Task Force) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).
The Task Force Chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, and LASBCA General Manager Gbolahan Oki are in charge of the exercise.
According to Gbenga Omotoso, commissioner for information, the structures were in violation of the 2019 Urban and Regional Planning Development Law.
When Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inspected the scene of the seven-story structure that collapsed on Banana Island, he ordered the demolition.
Sanwo-Olu attributed the April 12 event to incompetent state officials and developers looking to earn quick cash.
Additionally, he charged that the National Inland Waterways Authority, or NIWA, and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing had authorized an expansion of the shoreline.
