Victor Osimhen, a prolific forward from Nigeria, is the first African to have 22 goals in the Italian Serie A.

The record was accomplished by Osimhen, 24, who on May 4 against Undines scored in the 52nd minute to force a 1-1 draw in the Serie A match. The goal, which was Osimhen’s 22nd Serie A goal of the year, declared Napoli the Italian league champions.

Napoli was declared the Scudetto winner after their 1-1 tie with Undines since second-placed Lazio, who had 64 points in 33 games, will not be able to match the Naples-based team’s points in the remaining five league games this season.

Serie A: Osimhen Speaks On Playing Against Cristiano Ronaldo

Osimhen, who has served as the team’s talisman the entire season, had many reasons to rejoice following the game. The 24-year-old Nigerian football striker finished the game with Napoli’s most significant goal in 33 years, surpassing Samuel Eto’o to become the first African player to record 22 goals in a Serie A season.

Eto’o, a retired Cameroonian football player, set a Seria A record in 2010–2011 by scoring 21 goals for Inter Milan, a feat that made him the first African to be so productive in Italy.

Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo (Simy), a Nigerian forward who played for Crotone in the 2020–21 season, came close to surpassing Eto’o’s goal total but was unable to do so. He finished the campaign with 20 goals in Serie A, one fewer than the Cameroonian football legend.

The only African player with 22 goals in a Serie A season is now Victor Osimhen, who has scored the most goals in the league so far this season.
