There are currently differences within the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the allocation of National Assembly leadership positions for the 10th Senate and House of Representatives.

The present zoning scheme, as established by the APC National Working Committee, has drawn criticism from a number of stakeholders, especially those from the North-Central and South-East geopolitical zones. They contend that the structure marginalizes both zones and does not reflect equity, fairness, or justice.

The North-Central APC stakeholders expressed their discontent and the need to review the zoning system in a letter to the president-elect and the APC National Working Committee. They emphasized that the North-Central should avoid producing a presiding officer in the 10th Senate because it failed to do so in the 9th Senate. They demanded fair representation in the National Assembly leadership and underlined the significance of the North-Central to the party’s success and leadership.

In a similar vein, the South-East APC stakeholders issued a statement in which they voiced their displeasure with the zoning plan. They said that the South-East has been underrepresented and urged the party leadership to reassess the system to ensure that the region is adequately represented in the National Assembly leadership.

President-elect Bola Tinubu’s camp has stated that the zoning design was thoroughly reviewed and should be preserved in light of the escalating strife. They asked the party members to back the deal and concentrate on maintaining the party’s cohesion.

According to Tunde Rahman, a spokesperson for Tinubu, the zoning template was developed after extensive discussion among party stakeholders and was intended to ensure a balanced allocation of jobs throughout the geopolitical zones.

It’s unclear at this point if the APC can resolve the zoning dispute through negotiation or if the party’s divisions will only widen before the 10th Senate and House of Representatives take office.
