Seven wedding guests in Kano State have reportedly died, while several more have been admitted to hospitals after consuming tea that was apparently made with the locally common Zakami leaf, which contains a hallucinogenic chemical.

News reporters discovered that the incident took place on Tuesday in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State’s Sheka neighborhood.

According to the report, Sanusi Yahaya, an eyewitness and the bride’s older brother, claimed that it had become customary for young people in the neighborhood, particularly drug users, to prepare tea during ceremonies.

Yahaya said, “They cooked the tea and they themselves didn’t even know the number and types of drugs that were inside to the extent that some had to abandon it. But some of them insisted that they must drink from the tea, saying that their brains can take it.

“After drinking the tea, two people died, some have recovered while others are hospitalised”

According to Abdullahi Muhammad, another witness, seven individuals had already passed away as of Tuesday. Some of those hospitalized were out-of-towners who were simply passing through and drank some tea.

He said, “We don’t know the exact number for now, but in the morning seven were confirmed dead. Some of them were not even invited to the wedding, they just came to disguise and take their drugs”
