Chioma Ajunwa, the first woman from Nigeria to win an Olympic gold medal, has been appointed as a deputy commissioner of police.

According to news reports, she received a Thursday award from Assistant Inspector-General of Police Frank MBA.

After finishing the decorating, Mba, who had previously served as the Nigeria Police Force’s spokesman, shook hands with her as they posed for pictures.

Ajunwa made Olympic history by being the first black African woman and the first Nigerian to win gold in a field event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

She is still the only female athlete to have competed in both track and field and football at the Olympics and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ajunwa, a professional athlete, began her career playing football for the Nigerian women’s team and competed for The Falcons in the 1991 Women’s World Cup, however she was frequently benched.

Ajunwa received a national honor, Member of the Order of Niger (MON), from the then-head of state Sani Abacha after winning the Olympic gold medal in Atlanta in 1996.
