Onyeze Obiora and Iyabode Omojomolo were found guilty of narcotics trafficking and given eight years in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

In his ruling on Friday, Justice Daniel Osiagor found Obiora guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison for trafficking 300 grams of cocaine, while Justice Nicholas Oweibo found Omojomolo guilty and sentenced him to five years in prison for trafficking 900 grams of the psychoactive drug flunitrazepam.

The two defendants received their prison sentences on Friday after entering guilty pleas to each of the two counts that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency had brought against them.

The prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, had told the court that Obiora was arrested with the prohibited substance on March 20, at the export shed of Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

He also told the court that the second convict, Omojomolo was arrested on April 1 when she was about to board a Virgin Atlantic Airways flight to the United Kingdom.
Abu told the court that the offences contravened Section 20 (1) (a) (2) of the NDLEA, Act Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Following their guilty plea, the prosecutor urged the court to convict them as charged and sentence them in accordance with the laws they were charged with.
But the convicts’ lawyers, Mr Benson Ndakara and Vivian Ekwegh, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing them.

Justice Oweibo sentenced Omojomolo to five years imprisonment, but gave her a fine option of N500000, in lieu of the jail term.

Also, Justice Osiagor sentenced Obiora to three years imprisonment, but gave him an option of N2m fine, in lieu of the jail term.
