The governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has pledged to cover the unpaid wages and benefits of visiting professors at the public university.

The governor also pledged to make sure his office collaborates with the university’s administration to enhance education in the state.
This was what he said in statements to the Sokoto State University administration, which included Vice Chancellor Professor Bashir Garba. They had come to see him as a favor after he had been elected governor of the state.

“My administration will always create a supportive environment for the school to keep excelling,”

The governor, however, promised to have a one-on-one discussion with the vice-chancellor of the university on the best way forward to address the outside salaries and allowances of both the visiting lecturers and sabbatical staff.

Earlier in his remarks, the University Vice Chancellor, Professor Bashir Garba, congratulated the governor for his emergence as the new governor of the state and for obtaining the highest educational qualifications of a doctorate degree from Nasarawa State University.
He said Sokoto State University, which started operations about 10 years ago with about 800 students, now has a population of about 9,000 students in its register.

“The school started with three facilities and 23 programmes but now boasts four faculties with 35 undergraduate studies.

“The school also currently has a total of 39 postgraduate programmes with about 400 pioneer students.

“Sokoto State University is in the second stage of development as we just completed the building of two faculties of Engineering and that of Agriculture science with another two faculties building at the advance stage of completion”

He said the state is lacking in both engineering and technology development, hence the need to develop the two new additional faculties to bridge the already existing gap.
