After being sworn in as the 10th Senate President, Godswill Akpabio is currently visiting President Bola Tinubu at the White House.
In a hotly contested race, Akpabio (APC Akwa Ibom) defeated Abdullazeez Yari (APC Zamfara) by 66 votes to 43.
Akpabio served as the governor of Akwa Ibom State, and Yari, a senator serving his first term, served as the ruler of Zamfara.

Orji Uzor-Kalu, an APC candidate from Abia and a former governor, and Osita Izunaso, an APC candidate from Imo, withdrew from the race after being persuaded to do so by the APC and the President.
Recall that the APC National Working Committee, NWC, had micro-zoned the position of Senate President not only to the South-South but to Akpabio, who stepped down for President Tinubu during the APC Convention at Eagle Square, Abuja in 2022
