Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the largest Igbo socio-cultural organization, has criticized claims that the Lagos State Government is pursuing moves to victimize Igbo inhabitants in the state.

This was in response to many reactions to the state government’s demolition of the Alaba International Market in the state’s Ojo Local Government Area.

Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, had previously announced during an assessment visit to the market on Friday that the planned demolition of some of the buildings had been marked with a quit notice since 2016, adding that the process had been met with criticism, with claims that the decision was targeted at Igbo people in the market.

Meanwhile, Alex Ogbonnia, the spokesperson for the Igbo organization, said in a statement on Saturday that the group had conducted investigations into the incident and had been able to determine the genuine condition of affairs.

He stated that the group’s President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, asked the state government and the state’s Environment and Development Authority to be careful and goal-oriented during the demolition process, while asking for calm among the Igbo occupants of the market.

The statement partly read, “The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to several fake publications circulating on social media alleging a decision by the Lagos State Government to take actions to victimize the Igbo citizens domiciled in Lagos. Since the disturbing news broke out, we have made investigations in order to establish the true state of affairs.”
