On Friday, a police officer was killed as gunmen attacked the motorcade of former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha.
According to report, the former governor’s convoy was attacked at the Ihube hamlet on the Okigwe-Enugu expressway.
The expressway’s Ihube axis had been a frequent target of gunmen and kidnappers.

The former governor verified the police officer’s death and assassination attempt.
Okorocha, who served as governor of Imo for eight years, stated that the dead police officer was dispatched by the state Government House to accompany him to the funeral of the mother of the state’s immediate past governor, Emeka Ihedioha.
Okorocha, speaking on Sunday at Amaimo in the state’s Ikeduru Local Government Area, at the birthday anniversary celebration of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the November 11 governorship election in Imo state, Samuel Anyanwu, described the police officer’s death as “unfortunate.”
The former governor stated that his convoy was ambushed while coming from Enugu after attending the burial of the wife of a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani.

Okorocha stated that the governor of Enugu state, Peter Mbah, had released vehicles and security personnel to transport him and his team to Imo state for Ihedioha’s mother’s burial.
He revealed that the event happened after he was dropped off at his Spilbat estate in Owerri and was on his way back to Enugu when they were attacked.
Okorocha lamented that he was safe while in Enugu but was attacked in his own state.
He said, “I am angry. I am very angry. I am angry because I spent two days in Enugu and nothing happened to me but it is in my own state that the convoy released to me by the governor of Enugu state (a very good man) to attend the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother at Mbaise that was attacked and one policeman killed.
“What is happening in Imo state makes me angry. Many people who are running to govern Imo state are not capable but I have seen one man whom the cap fits. When it is time, I will speak.”

According to one of the former governor’s aides who talked to The PUNCH, the cars in the convoy, which included an SUV, a bus, and a Hilux, were riddled with gunshots.
He claimed that the terrorists kidnapped and released two other security agents on the same day.
