On June 16, Forbes Magazine named South African billionaire Johann Rupert “Africa’s richest man,” ousting Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote, who had held the distinction for the previous ten years.

According to Forbes’ real-time Global Billionaires Ranking, Rupert’s net worth is $12 billion, while Dangote’s is $10.8 billion. Dangote’s net worth plummeted as a result of the naira’s depreciation as a result of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to auction the dollar at a lower rate than the official market price.

The central bank sold the dollar for over 30% less.
