In an attempt to execute the seven-day sit-at-home order proclaimed by a section of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, led by Simon Ekpa, hoodlums set fire to a police van in Ukwagba village and shot intermittently to intimidate locals.

It was said that hoodlums hellbent on enforcing the sit-in in Ebonyi State attacked the Ukwagba police checkpoint and instructed cops to go because they were not seeking for them. They, on the other hand, set fire to their police wagon.

The hoodlums also assaulted the Ishieke police checkpoint and shot irregularly, causing police officers in the region to flee for their lives, according to sources.

Confirming the occurrence, the chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Prince Odono Okechukwu, urged council stakeholders to work together to help him overcome any insecurity in the area.

Prince Odono, speaking to reporters shortly after a security briefing at 135 Izhiangbo, the Council Headquarters, strongly condemned the burning of the Police Van at Ukwagba village.

He vowed to use all possible methods to catch the offenders and urged Traditional Rulers, Town Union Presidents, and community vigilantes to form a functional rapport to promote peace in their areas.

Responding, Jude Chikadibia Okpor, Commissioner of Information and State Orientation in Ebonyi, expressed dismay over the uneasiness in some sections of the state as a result of alleged activities of hoodlums and unscrupulous individuals.

He said, “The government, therefore wishes to advise the general public to go about their lawful businesses as security agents are on top of the situation.”

When approached for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ebonyi State Command, SP. Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said the command had stationed officers in numerous critical locations throughout the state to prevent a breakdown in law and order.
